The practical difference is emphasis: MacWhisper is a Mac transcription workstation whose Pro edition also adds system-wide dictation, while Superwhisper makes system-wide dictation part of its free product and builds Pro around a wider choice of local and cloud models, AI modes, and one license across Mac, Windows, and iOS.

Choose MacWhisper when transcription is the center of the job
MacWhisper Free already covers the workflow its name is best known for: record from the Mac microphone or open common audio and video formats, transcribe locally, and export text or subtitles. Pro adds automatic speaker recognition, batch transcription, more export formats, meeting recording, watched folders, integrations, a command-line tool, and translation.
That makes MacWhisper especially coherent when your input already exists as a recording. Interviews, meetings, podcasts, videos, and folders of media benefit from features that are not merely about replacing keyboard typing. The current mw command-line tool can also drive file transcription, model selection, speaker detection, subtitles, and structured output from scripts.
System-wide dictation exists too, but it belongs to the direct-download Pro edition. MacWhisper's official support says Dictation can write into any text field with a keyboard shortcut; higher-quality dictation, grammar improvement, AI prompts, and app-specific prompts are part of that paid workflow.

Choose Superwhisper when live dictation comes first
Superwhisper reverses the starting point. Its Free tier includes voice-to-text that works in any app, meeting recording and transcription, 100+ language support, small AI models, and custom prompt control. You can therefore test the actual system-wide dictation workflow without buying Pro.
Pro expands the model choice. Superwhisper's current model directory lists cloud speech models and local models including Whisper variants and NVIDIA Parakeet, plus local and cloud language models for rewriting. Local speech models can keep audio on the device and work without an internet connection; cloud models are available when their speed or accuracy profile is preferable.
The platform difference is also substantial. Superwhisper currently supports macOS 13.3 or later, Windows 10 or later, and iOS 18 or later, and its FAQ says one Pro license can be activated on all of your own devices. If dictation needs to follow you from a Mac to Windows or iPhone, MacWhisper's direct Mac license is not the equivalent package.

Both can work offline, but “local” does not mean the same setup
Neither product forces every speech recording through a cloud service. MacWhisper is built around local Whisper transcription and can connect to external AI providers when you add API keys. It can also connect to local AI through Ollama and LM Studio for supported AI workflows.
Superwhisper exposes a broader menu inside the product. Its Free tier includes smaller local speech models, while Pro unlocks additional local and cloud speech models and local language models. The official model page identifies which models are on-device and which send audio to a cloud transcription service.
This distinction matters for sensitive material. Decide separately whether speech recognition must remain local and whether the later AI rewriting step must also remain local. A workflow can use local transcription and then send the resulting text to a cloud language model; “offline transcription” alone does not prove the whole processing chain is offline.
The price comparison changes with the feature you actually need

Different currencies make a simplistic break-even calculation misleading, and the feature boundaries matter more.
If your requirement is system-wide dictation, Superwhisper lets you start on Free while MacWhisper puts that capability in Pro. If your requirement is advanced file transcription, MacWhisper starts from a stronger free file workflow while Superwhisper lists audio and video file transcription under Pro.
The paid decision is therefore not “which lifetime option is cheaper?” MacWhisper's one-time purchase is compelling for a Mac-centered transcription toolkit. Superwhisper's higher Lifetime price buys a different package, including its wider platform coverage and Pro model catalog. Monthly and annual Superwhisper also make sense when you want to avoid the larger upfront commitment.
Pick by input: existing recordings or words you are speaking now
Choose MacWhisper if most work begins with an audio or video file, meeting, batch, watched folder, or automation task and you want a Mac-focused tool with a one-time Pro license. Its dictation feature can cover live writing too once you buy the direct-download Pro edition.
Choose Superwhisper if the recurring job is speaking into whatever app is currently focused, you want to test that behavior on a permanent Free tier, or you need the same licensed product across Mac, Windows, and iOS. Its larger model menu also matters if choosing between local and cloud engines is part of your workflow.
