MacWhisper has a free version and a Pro version sold as a one-time license. On the official MacWhisper site, Pro is currently listed at €64 per personal license with lifetime updates. There is no recurring MacWhisper Pro subscription for the direct-download version. That sounds simple, but the buying decision gets confusing because the App Store edition is a separate product listing called Whisper Transcription and offers weekly, monthly, and yearly in-app subscriptions.
The figures and terms below were checked against MacWhisper's official site, support documentation, and official Gumroad listing on August 9, 2026. Checkout currency can vary, so confirm the final amount before paying.
Free is permanent, but system-wide dictation is a Pro feature
MacWhisper Free is listed at €0 and described as free forever. It can record from the Mac microphone, transcribe common audio and video formats, support more than 100 languages, and export basic transcript and subtitle formats.
Pro adds much more than a larger transcription model. The current feature table includes automatic speaker recognition, batch transcription, additional export formats, translation, meeting recording, integrations, AI-service connections, watched folders, and the command-line workflow.
For TalkTalkType readers, the important dividing line is dictation. MacWhisper's support documentation says system-wide dictation into text fields requires Pro in the direct-download MacWhisper app. Pro also adds higher-quality dictation, grammar improvement, AI prompts, and app-specific prompts. If you only need to transcribe files, test Free first. If you want MacWhisper as a typing replacement across apps, price the Pro license into the decision from the start.
Pro is a one-time purchase with lifetime updates
The official MacWhisper page currently lists Pro at €64 per license and says it includes lifetime updates. The official Gumroad listing likewise describes it as a one-time payment with no subscription and access to current and future updates.
A personal license is intended for your own devices. MacWhisper's licensing support page describes a soft limit of three device activations and explains that a license can be disconnected when moving to a new computer. That is different from buying three seats for three people: multi-user use should use the volume-license options.
The one-time model is attractive when you expect to keep using the app for years because there is no scheduled Pro renewal. It does not mean every external AI service is free forever. Features that use third-party APIs can require your own API key and provider charges, and the App Store Assistant cloud service is separately billed.
Discounts and refunds change the effective price
MacWhisper's official store says journalists, students, and nonprofits can contact support for a 25% discount. Volume packs are also offered for organizations, with per-license pricing falling as the number of seats rises.
The official Gumroad listing currently states that Pro buyers can request a refund within seven days if they are unhappy and explain what could be improved. Treat that as the direct-store policy; App Store purchases follow Apple's purchase and refund mechanisms instead.
Because MacWhisper sometimes runs promotional links, do not assume a discount mentioned in an old review is still active. The base price and any current promotion should be checked at the official purchase page on the day you buy.
The App Store version uses a different pricing model
MacWhisper's support documentation distinguishes the direct-download app, named MacWhisper, from the App Store app, named Whisper Transcription. They share core functionality but do not share the same licensing path.
The direct version accepts the one-time MacWhisper Pro license and includes advanced capabilities that are restricted in the App Store build, including dictation into any text field and broader AI-provider integration. The App Store version instead offers weekly, monthly, and yearly in-app purchases. A direct-download license key cannot be entered into the App Store version.
There is also an optional Assistant subscription for cloud transcription and AI assistance in Whisper Transcription. Users can avoid that subscription for supported AI tasks by supplying their own API keys, but those API providers may charge separately.
So a search for “MacWhisper pricing” has two valid answers. If you want the direct Mac app with system-wide dictation, compare Free with the €64 one-time Pro license. If you specifically want the App Store build or iOS path, inspect the in-app subscription price for your storefront instead of assuming the direct license applies.
When the €64 Pro license makes sense
Pro is the natural fit if you want system-wide dictation, regular meeting or file transcription, batch jobs, speaker recognition, automation, the CLI, or integrations and expect to keep using them. The one-time payment is especially easy to evaluate when you dislike recurring subscriptions.
Stay on Free if your main job is occasional local transcription and its export options cover what you need. If your actual goal is lightweight Japanese or English voice typing rather than a full transcription workstation, compare the current TalkTalkType pricing too. TalkTalkType uses recurring plans and a narrower feature set, so it is not a like-for-like replacement for MacWhisper's file, meeting, local-model, and automation capabilities.
The useful sequence is to decide which MacWhisper edition you need, test Free where possible, identify the Pro-only capability that changes your work, and only then compare the one-time price with subscription alternatives.
