The lowest sticker price is not automatically the cheapest choice, because each product measures usage and unlocks features differently.

Start with the pricing model, not the monthly number
Apple Dictation is the baseline because it is part of macOS. Apple says Dictation can enter text anywhere you can type. There is no separate Dictation subscription to buy, although the capabilities and processing path vary by language, region, and system settings. If the built-in feature already handles your workflow, paying for another app may add no value.
The paid apps solve different problems. TalkTalkType uses weekly dictation and voice-time allowances. Wispr Flow uses a word allowance on Basic and advertises unlimited words on Pro. Superwhisper separates Free from Pro, then lets you buy the same Pro feature set monthly, annually, or as a Lifetime purchase.
That makes direct cost-per-word comparisons misleading. A long AI prompt can be one TalkTalkType dictation, hundreds of Wispr words, or simply part of a Superwhisper Pro workflow. Compare the meter you will actually hit.
Free can mean built in, recurring allowance, or limited tier
"Free" describes several different arrangements.
Apple Dictation is included with the operating system. TalkTalkType Free does not expire and resets its weekly allowance: 30 dictations and 15 voice minutes, with 20 Clean inputs and recordings up to 60 seconds. Wispr Flow Basic is also a continuing free plan and currently lists 2,000 words per week on Mac or Windows. Superwhisper says its Free features remain available after an initial 15-minute Pro trial allocation.
A useful free plan is therefore one whose limit matches your normal week. If you dictate a few short Japanese or English messages on one compatible Mac, TalkTalkType Free may be enough indefinitely. If you want broad language support or use Windows as well, Wispr or Superwhisper may fit better even before you pay.
Monthly plans buy flexibility when your usage is uncertain
A monthly subscription is easiest to justify when you know you need paid features but do not know for how long.
TalkTalkType Plus starts at $1/month, Pro at $7, and Max at $18. The product currently requires macOS 26 or later and recognises Japanese and English. All current plans can be used on unlimited Macs. Its lower prices only matter if that narrow platform and language scope matches your work.
Wispr Flow Pro is currently listed at $15 per user per month on monthly billing. It supports Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android and more than 100 languages, with unlimited words on Pro. Superwhisper Pro is $8.49/month and includes its full Pro feature set, including cloud and local voice models, custom modes, custom vocabulary, and cross-platform licensing.
If you expect to stop after a project, monthly billing can cost less overall than locking in an annual discount you do not use.
Annual billing is cheaper only when you stay long enough
Wispr Flow lists annual Pro at $12 per user per month billed annually, versus $15 monthly. Superwhisper lists $84.99 per year versus $8.49 per month, which makes twelve monthly payments $101.88.
The saving exists only if you would have kept the subscription through most of the year. Annual billing moves the decision forward: you pay a larger amount now for a lower effective monthly rate later.
TalkTalkType currently publishes monthly prices rather than a separate annual discount. That difference can matter more than a small headline price gap if you prefer not to prepay for a year.
Lifetime removes recurring billing but adds a different risk
Superwhisper is the clearest Lifetime option in this comparison. Its official Pro documentation lists Lifetime at $249.99 once, with the same Pro features as monthly and annual billing.
At current prices, that equals about 29.4 months of monthly Pro or just under three annual payments. The arithmetic is simple; the decision is not. A Lifetime license is most attractive when you expect to keep using the product for years and strongly prefer a one-time payment.

TalkTalkType and Wispr Flow do not currently publish a Lifetime purchase in the plan information used here. If a one-time purchase is a hard requirement, Superwhisper is the relevant option among these products.
The cheapest product is the one whose missing features do not force a second purchase
Price matters after product fit.
Choose Apple Dictation when the built-in macOS experience is enough and you do not need the extra workflow features of a dedicated app. Choose TalkTalkType when Japanese or English recognition on macOS 26+ fits your work, weekly allowances are easy to reason about, and a $0 or $1 entry point matters. Choose Wispr Flow when broad language support, Windows and mobile platforms, or its unlimited-word Pro model are part of the job. Choose Superwhisper when local model options, its broader Pro feature set, cross-platform licensing, or Lifetime billing justify the higher upfront or monthly price.
For TalkTalkType specifically, check the current pricing page before subscribing. If you need a language other than Japanese or English, an older macOS version, Windows, mobile apps, or a Lifetime license, pick a product that actually satisfies that requirement instead of choosing by price alone.
Recheck volatile prices before you buy
Competitor pricing changes faster than the basic decision framework. Apple Dictation's role as a built-in baseline is relatively stable, but subscription amounts, trials, annual discounts, and Lifetime offers can move.
